Calcium Silicide CaSi2 (Powder)
Calcium silicide, or calcium disilicide as it is sometimes called, can be an inorganic compound. This silicide of calcium is a silicide. CaSi2 (molecular formula) is calcium silicide. The molecular weight for this compound is 96.2514g/mol. Calcium silicide is a solid that can be found in off-white and dark gray colors to black. The calcium silicide can also be broken down in hot water. Calcium silicide is explosive and can explode in the open. Calcium silicide forms by reacting Si with Ca metal at 850°C. This can cause spontaneous ignition in the air.

How Silicide CaSi2 Pul Produced?
1. A direct melt of elemental silica and calcium can yield calcium silicide which is more pure. Two steps are required to complete the operation.
Start by mixing the powdered silicon and pure calcium evenly. Once the ingredients are well combined, use a ceramic porcelain boat to form the vessel. It has been heated up to 1000°C. Within a matter of seconds the mixture will melt and proceed violently. After the porcelain boat is taken out, CaSi will be immediately coagulated. CaSi is a porous concrete block with metallic luster. It has a dark lead-gray hue.
You will need to mix the CaSi mixture with Si powder in equal amounts. Once it is mixed, you can put it into a nickel vessel and heat at 1000°C under an H2 gaz stream. This is because it takes a long time to complete the final phase of the reaction. It should be heated for about 15 hours.
2. Pure CaO mixed with silicon in appropriate fluxes, CaF2 & CaCl2, melt at 1400°C for CaSi2, which will then be mixed with a substantial amount of silicon.

Calcium silicide is used as an alloying metal, such as for deoxidizing and removal of phosphorus.
It is used for special mixes in the pyrotechnic trade, like flashing components and striking caps.
The calcium silicide is used for certain initiators, fire-engineries and smoke elements.
Silicone and calcium alloys are commonly used in desulfurizers, deoxidizers, and other purposes within the steel and foundry industries.
Researchers have found calcium silicide to be very corrosive of all metals.
Calcium intermetallic silicide (CaSi2), which is made by the reduction of calcium oxide in the electrolyte.
A few time-delay fuels are made from silicon, which can be used for explosive bolts, grenades and infrared concoys. A lot of smoke components are composed of hexachloroethane. As they undergo combustion, silicon tetrachloride will be produced. One mixture may contain gum arabic, which inhibits the degradation of calcium silicide.
Iron oxide and calcium silicide were used in self-heating canned military foodstuffs during World War II. They are similar to thermite. Once the mixture has been ignited, it produces heat but not gas.
