Tungsten Carbide, WC Powder how is it made?
Use metal tungsten as raw material. The tungsten granules have a particle size range of 3-5 m. Carbon black has the same particles. W2C can be produced from hydrogen streams and it continues to react at high temperature to give rise to WC. In other words, tungsten Hexacarbonyl can be thermally broken down at temperatures between 650-1000oC in the CO atmosphere. To obtain tungsten crystals, it then reacts with carbon monoxide at 1150oC to form WC. W2C can also be created at temperatures exceeding this limit.
Here is the chemical reaction formula
2W + = C = W2C
W + C = WC
In order to create tungsten powder, Tungsten trioxide WO3 is hydrogenated. This mixture (containing tungsten powder, carbon black) in an equal ratio is dried-blended using a ballmill for around 10 hours. It then gets press-formed with pressure about 1t/cm2. Use the pressurized materials block to make WC. This is because the reaction takes place around the tungsten particles. However, since W2C is not generated until the end of the reaction (mainly due to low temperature), the reactions are incomplete and unreacted WC and intermediate W2C must be left. This means that it should be heated up to the previously mentioned high temperature. It should be measured according to raw tungsten’s particle size. Reactions with coarse particles, which have an average of around 150 m in particle size, proceed at a temperature between 1550 and 1650°C.

WO3 + 3H2 → W + 3H2O
2WO3 + 3C → 2W + 3CO2
2W+C =W2C
W + C = WC

Application of Tungsten Carbide and WC Powder:
Tungsten Carbide is widely used to make high-speed cutting instruments, furnace structural parts, jet engine components, cermet material and resistance heating element. These are used for the production of cutting tools, wear resistance parts, melting.crucibles (for metals like cobalt, bismuth, and copper), and wear-resistant silicon films.
Tungsten carbide is used to create super-hard, wear-resistant tools.
Tungsten carbide can create solid solutions when combined with several carbides. WC-TiC-Co-cement carbide tools have been extensively used.
Tungsten carbide can also used in modified additions to NbC–C, TaC–C ternary carbides. These can help reduce the sintering heat and provide excellent performance. It’s also useful in aeronautical materials.
Tungsten carbide (WC) is also possible to be produced by using tungsten anihydride, (WO3) and graphite under a low atmosphere at a temperature of 1400-1600. The hot press sintering process or hot isostatic pressure sintering are two ways to make denser ceramic products.
