potassium dioxide is a chemical compound that consists of two potassium atoms joined together with one oxygen atom. Its chemical formula is K2O, and its oxidation state is +1. It is an ionic compound because two K-atoms are required to balance the -2 charge on the oxygen atom.

How does it react with sulphuric acid?

The reaction of potassium oxide with sulphuric acid produces a solution of sodium hydroxide and potassium sulfate. This is a common reaction in glassmaking and the cement industry.

Is it ionic or covalent?

Like most metals, potassium is electropositive. Hence, it will polarize the oxygen atom to give it an ionic bond. This ionic bond forms the potassium oxide.

Does it decompose at a high temperature?

When heated, it decomposes into potassium peroxide and potassium metal. It is a highly reactive material that can be used as a fertilizer in agriculture. It is also useful in the glass, ceramic, and optic industries.

Does it have any health hazards?

It is toxic when ingested and inhaled. It can cause respiratory illnesses and skin irritation. It can also damage your eyes.

How much potassium oxide is in a fertilizer?

The amount of potassium oxide in a fertilizer is usually reported in the N-P-K numbers on the label. This number is based on the percentage of K2O that would be provided by a fertilizer that was in the form of potassium carbonate, potassium sulfate, or potassium chloride.
Normally, potassium oxide is not used as a fertilizer in these products because the amounts of these types of potash are often more than 83% by weight. If the fertilizer had been in the form of potassium sulfate, for example, its N-P-K number would have been only 18.8%.
