What exactly is Molybdenum Lubricant?

Molybdenum a mineral found in nature has been used to enhance the lubricity for mechanical parts over many centuries. It acts as an antiwear layer by drawing itself onto the metal surface. Molybdenum sulfide is also an important lubricant. It’s a mixture of molybdenum, sulfur atoms. Through its sulfur atoms, this compound can bind to metal surfaces. Therefore, it prevents any asperities from touching the metal surfaces. MoS2, another common molybdenum lubricant, has particles sizes that range from 1 to 100 um. The sliding friction properties of MoS2 are low at 0.01 to 0.01 s.
